I have seen this more than a couple of times...the child does something bad, the mother or father scolds or hits back, the child is shocked and doesn't understand for a moment why there is harshness from the other, it starts crying, the parent's emotions take over, they get re-united only to repeat it at a more sophisticated level the next time.
This is not just the case with child-parent but is in all sorts of relationships. Two funny things are that the child goes back to the parent only because it has nowhere else to go and it's ego is so under-developed unlike the case of adults that the parent doesn't have any justification for the anger.
It's a crazy life.
